Tried using a piece of old denim for a spine lining on a small notebook, and it worked way better than I thought.

Yeah, I get that. I had a book where the cover board was coming loose, and I just used some heavy-duty packing tape on the inside spine. It's held for like three years now. My go-to is always a bit of folded cardstock or a cereal box to shim something. It's all about the stuff already in the junk drawer.

That's a solid example of a thing I see all the time. People overthink materials and buy special stuff when the best tool is already in the house. I fixed a wobbly table leg with a folded beer coaster. My friend used a butter knife to tighten a loose screw on her glasses for years. The simple fix is usually right there.

Oh absolutely. It's so easy to get caught up thinking you need the perfect, store-bought solution. I've used a stack of old magazines to level a washing machine and a dime as a tiny screwdriver. There's a real satisfaction in making do with what you have on hand. It saves a trip to the store and often works just as well, if not better, because you actually fix it right then.
