That librarian who taught me how to make a French groove stitch saved my first rebind
Back in 2019 I tried rebinding a worn out copy of The Hobbit for my nephew and after three failed attempts with a regular saddle stitch I finally got the spine to lie flat using her method, has anyone else found a specific stitch that just works better for older paperbacks?

Read somewhere that Japanese stab binding can work miracles on stubborn paperbacks but I never tried it myself, sounds like that librarian really knew her stuff

Wait, do you mean you actually used a stitch that wasn’t just me yelling at my book until it gives up? At least you had a plan, I’m still trying to figure out which side of the spine is supposed to be the front. Sounds like that librarian should have a YouTube channel and a hotline for desperate book binders like us.
