Hot take: bevel prep on 50 year old steel is a debate I keep losing

I spent last Tuesday on a tank job near Gary, Indiana, where the foreman wanted a 30 degree bevel on some plate that had more rust than metal. I argued for a shallower cut to keep the wire from burning through, but he swore by the old way. Half the weld ended up with porosity and we had to grind it out and redo it. Now I'm second guessing whether the angle actually matters or if we just had wet rods. Anyone else run into old timers who won't budge on prep technique? How do you handle that without starting a fight on the deck?

Man, did you accidentally grab rods from the 80s or what? I swear half the time it's not the angle, it's the mystery bucket of "good enough" rods someone left out in the dew.
