Hot take: Board expansions felt unnecessary until I got one on a whim.
I saw them as mere add-ons. This one added a whole new layer to our sessions.

Why do we write off extras as useless until we actually try them? @michaelsmith's Seafarers thing shows it happens with all sorts of stuff.

Finally grabbed Seafarers for Catan and it totally changed how we play our weekly game.

You know, I used to skip expansions too, seeing them as just more pieces to lose. But my group talked me into trying one for our favorite game, and it was a game changer. It added new rules that made every match feel fresh, like we were learning it all over again. That layer you mentioned is real, it stops the game from getting stale. Now I always check if there's an expansion before we dive into a new board game. It's worth the extra cost for how much longer we get to enjoy it.
