DAE have a simple game of Catan turn into a trade agreement summit?

I hosted a game night last weekend, and we played Catan. What should have been a chill evening became a series of intense negotiations. Every trade offer was met with skepticism and counteroffers. At one point, two players were drafting a written contract for sheep and wheat. I had to step in as the unofficial referee, which was ironic since I'm usually just the delivery guy. We spent more time arguing than rolling dice. It was exhausting but also kind of amazing how into it everyone was. Board game geeks can turn anything into a diplomatic event.

My friend's group once drafted a formal sheep embargo treaty.

You called it exhausting but amazing, but I see it differently (maybe I'm just not cut out for high-stakes board game politics). All that negotiating sucks the fun out for me because we spend more time talking than playing. My group once spent half an hour debating a single wood trade, and I was totally checked out by the end. So to me, it's more frustrating than fun when a simple game turns into a summit.

Heard about @rivera.nathan's friend's sheep embargo, that sounds crazy.
