Took me 3 years to realize I was quenching in the wrong oil the whole time
Was rehardening a chisel last week and wondered why it kept coming out soft, then my buddy pointed out I'd been using cooking oil from my kitchen instead of actual quench oil, has anyone else made that kind of mix-up with their gear?

My neighbor did this exact thing with his motorcycle chain oiler, filled it with vegetable oil thinking it was the same stuff. Took him a month to figure out why his chain was attracting every piece of road grit in the county.

Vegetable oil isn't even close to the same thing though, and that's the problem. People grab whatever oil is handy without checking the viscosity or the additives. Motorcycle chain lube is made to stick to metal at high speeds and throw off dirt, but vegetable oil just turns into a gooey mess that picks up everything. Your neighbor definitely learned a hard lesson, but honestly who mistakes cooking oil for chain lube in the first place? The labels are completely different for a reason. At least he figured it out before the chain wore out in a few hundred miles.

It's wild how people treat all oils the same across the board. Tbh that same logic gets applied to a lot of stuff in life, like using dish soap in the dishwasher or grabbing the wrong type of paint for a project. Little differences matter way more than people think until something ends up a mess.
