TIL damascus steel billets are 200 layers max, not 1000

Read it in a metallurgy journal at the library last Tuesday, turns out most of those folded patterns folks brag about are just surface etching, so has anyone actually counted their own layers before selling a knife?

Feels like the same thing with "military grade" slapped on everything, sounds impressive until you look it up and it's just a basic spec. Guys selling 1000 layer knives probably never counted either.
