Seriously, my friend had the same thing happen. He was using a cheap fixed speed for years, then tried a variable speed at a meet-up. Said it felt like cheating, everything got so much easier.

Oh man, totally. I fought getting a variable speed for so long, just using a basic single speed. Then I tried shaping a big blade on a friend's machine, going slow for the tricky parts. It was a total game changer, like I wasn't fighting the tool anymore.

Yeah, @the_piper, "fighting the tool" is the perfect way to put it. I was so stubborn with my old one-speed, I basically taught myself to fight.
