Rant: spent $40 on a used DVD box set of The Wire at a pawn shop in Dayton and half the discs skip

Honestly I thought I was getting a steal since it was the full 5 seasons, but three discs from season 2 freeze up every 10 minutes. Tbh the pawn shop had a no returns sign taped to the counter so I'm stuck with it. Has anyone had luck resurfacing discs at home or should I just bite it and buy the digital version?
