My offset smoker's firebox door latch snapped at hour 7 of a 12 hour brisket
Was running a packer brisket on my old offset last Saturday, trying to hold 250 in the rain, and right around the 7 hour mark the latch on the firebox door just gave out and popped open. Temps spiked to almost 400 before I noticed because I was inside watching the game, and the flat side of that brisket got pretty much torched on one end. I ended up wedging a pair of vise grips on the door handle and a brick against it to keep it shut for the rest of the cook, which somehow held together. The point was still good but I lost probably a third of the flat to that heat spike. Any of you had a door latch or hinge fail mid cook, and did you just swap the hardware or retire the whole pit?
That temp spike to 400 is what gets me. Losing a third of the flat hurts, but the fact that you got it back under control with vise grips and a brick is pretty impressive. My old Chargriller had the hinge weld crack on the firebox and I just drilled it out for a bolt kit, way easier than finding a new latch that fits. Swapping hardware is cheaper than a new pit if the rest of the body is still solid.
