Library sales beat thrift stores for cheap hardcovers, found this out last weekend in Portland

I usually hit up Goodwill for books (you know, $2 paperbacks), but a friend dragged me to the Multnomah County library's annual sale. Hardcovers were $1, and they had way better selections - like organized by genre instead of just dumped in a bin. I grabbed a like-new Stephen King hardcover for a buck. Thrift stores around here price hardcovers at $4-5 easy. Does your local library do sales like this?

Right, because who needs thrift stores when you can get the same Stephen King book for a dollar AND feel superior about supporting your local library? I swear, Portland libraries probably have better curated selections than some actual bookstores I've been in. My local library sale was mostly moldy romance novels and a 1987 guide to VCR repair, so consider yourself lucky.

lilyo30, you're not wrong about Portland. They have enough bookish hipsters that their library sales actually get curated because people volunteer just to sort the donations. Our local sale had a box labeled "cookbooks 1995-2008" and it was just three copies of the same church potluck binder and a stained Better Homes and Gardens.
