Old barber at my shop in Akron told me to stop brushing my neck strips flat, and he was right
I had been cutting for about 3 years and always pressed the neck strip down flat on the skin before draping the cape, thinking it looked cleaner. An old barber who rents the chair next to me watched me do it one slow Tuesday and just said "you're trapping hair under there, watch." Sure enough, when I lifted the cape after a fade, there was a ring of little clippings stuck between the strip and the guy's neck. Now I leave the strip a bit loose at the top and fold it once, and cleanup at the end takes me maybe 20 seconds instead of a full rewipe. Any of you got a small habit like that you had to unlearn?
Pressing it flat is the whole reason the strip stays put when the cape slides around, a loose top edge means it rides up the second a client tilts his head down. That ring of clippings you saw is just hair that got in before you laid the strip down, and a quick brush of the neck first would have fixed it without changing how you drape. Cleaning up 20 seconds faster means nothing if you're redoing the strip three times a cut.
