Finally figured out why my fades were always off after 2 years behind the chair

So I went back and forth between using my Andis Masters and my Wahl Seniors for like 6 months. Thought it was just me being clumsy. Then an old barber at a shop in Austin told me to try clipper over comb instead of relying on my guards so much. Night and day difference. The blending is so much smoother now. Anyone else have a tool or technique they ignored for way too long?

3 years in and guards still give me way cleaner fades than clipper over comb ever will.

That "clipper over comb" part is actually not what I think you mean... because guards do give cleaner fades if you're using them right. But clipper over comb is a different technique where you use the comb as a guide while the clipper runs over it, not a replacement for guards. You can get a really smooth fade with guards if your blending is on point, but clipper over comb is more for when you need to take bulk off the top or work without guards at all. It's not really a "this versus that" thing, they're just different tools for different parts of the haircut. If you're getting clean fades with guards after three years, that's solid progress, just don't box yourself into thinking one method is better than the other.
