A guy at the Portland Nursery tomato tasting set me straight on cherry varieties
I drove 40 minutes to the tomato tasting event at Portland Nursery two weekends ago just to grab a free seedling and kill an afternoon. A volunteer named Ray handed me a sample of a Sungold and said most balcony growers fail because they plant one cherry type and never try a second one for backup, so I grabbed a Gold Nugget too and both are going nuts on my 3 foot railing box. What's your go to cherry tomato for a small space?
Oh man, that reminds me of my neighbor's setup last summer. He had one Sungold that went absolutely nuts, like we were picking a bowl full every other day and still had more than we knew what to do with. Then the year before that he swore by some heirloom beefsteak and got maybe six tomatoes off the whole plant. Cherry types do tend to be way more reliable self-pollinators though, so you're probably right that jade_lane doesn't need to worry much. That said, if it's super hot out when they flower, even the good ones can drop blossoms. I've seen that happen around here in July more than once.
