Why did it take me 5 years to realize I was overmixing my muffin batter

I kept making these dense, hockey puck muffins for years and thought I just sucked at baking. Then my sister watched me one time and was like 'dude you are beating the crap out of that batter, stop.' She showed me a video where you fold until just combined and lumps are fine. First batch after that came out so fluffy I almost cried. Anyone else have a basic technique they were doing totally backwards for way too long?
