My first starter took a solid three months to really get going.

Yeah, three months is a real test of will. Mine was the same way, just sitting there doing nothing for ages. I almost gave up on it a bunch of times.

Wow, three months! That's some serious patience. My first one was super sluggish too until I switched to feeding it with whole wheat flour instead of all-purpose. The extra stuff in it seemed to kick things into gear after about six weeks.
