inThe way people discuss character motivation has changed a lot since the 90s
...and that's why I think some of those old discussions were better. My dad used to tell me about his college lit classes in the early 90s where they'd spend a whole session just on one character's motivation in a short story. Now it feels like everyone's trying to figure out if the character is a good person or a bad person before they even finish the first chapter. I remember reading The Great Gatsby in high school and we spent a whole class just debating why Gatsby throws those parties. Nobody was calling him a hero or a villain. We were just trying to figure out what he wanted. That was more interesting than the hot takes you see online now where people just slap labels on characters.

inMy professor in Portland said my color palettes were too 'safe' and predictable, which pushed me to finally try that neon green accent I was scared of.
Nah, I get that. Sometimes that one weird color just doesn't sit right no matter what. I've had it work out exactly once in like ten tries. The rest of the time it looks forced, like you tried too hard to be clever. But when it does land, it really lands.

inLast summer I hit 500 miles on the Pacific Crest Trail section near Crater Lake
That line about "one more ridge" is exactly how it goes. I've done that same thing on shorter loops where I look down and realize I accidentally hiked 20 miles when I only planned on 10. The best adventures always happen when you stop keeping track and just follow the trail. Crater Lake is a killer place to hit 500, that section is pure magic. Those accidental milestones feel way better than the ones you plan for because they catch you off guard. A true sign you were in the zone and not obsessing over numbers.

inShoutout to the guy who told me to try North Creek Trails for trail running
Man I feel you on the knee thing. I used to pound pavement near the industrial lots by the depot and my shins were screaming after every run. Then some guy at a rest stop told me about a loop out past the old logging road. That dirt is like running on pillows compared to concrete. I found this one stretch where the ferns hang over the trail like a tunnel and it's dead quiet except for some birds. It's a game changer when you find those spots that don't beat you up.

inBought a fancy 50 dollar garlic press and it broke in 2 weeks
Three bucks at a yard sale, my buddy swears by this old school metal press he found. Thing looks like it survived a war. Hinge is solid, no cheap plastic joints. He's had it for years, uses it every Sunday for his pasta sauce. Meanwhile my fancy Williams-Sonoma one crapped out after three garlic cloves.
