My oven runs cold and I finally fixed it with a $5 oven thermometer.

For a year, my cakes were dense and my cookies spread into one giant sheet. I followed recipes exactly but things kept coming out wrong. I blamed my flour, my mixing, everything but the oven. Then I saw a comment on a baking blog about checking oven temp. I bought a basic oven thermometer from the grocery store and hung it on the rack. Preheated to 350, it only read 300. That explained a lot. Now I set my oven dial to 385 to get a real 350, and my bakes have been perfect. Has anyone else had to adjust their oven temp by a huge amount like that?

Yeah, that's super common with older ovens. Mine was off by almost 40 degrees too. The thermometer is the best five bucks you'll spend in the kitchen.

Right? My old one was so off it ruined a whole batch of cookies... glad you mentioned that, @oliver523.
