My neighbor's patio project taught me something about prep work
Last spring he poured concrete directly over grass and now the whole thing is cracking six months later. Has anyone else dealt with fixing someone else's rushed job?

Pouring directly over grass is almost like you're asking the ground to shift. The grass decomposes and leaves air pockets under the slab, so no wonder it's cracking. He'd be better off tearing it out and starting fresh with proper gravel and compaction, even if it feels like throwing money away right now.
