Appreciation post: The old farmer at the feed store who saved my rooster
I was in a panic last fall because my rooster, Hank, was limping bad. At the local feed store in Bakersfield, an old guy saw me looking at poultry meds and asked what was wrong. He told me to check for a bumblefoot infection, saying 'Nine times out of ten, it's a corn in their foot, not a break.' He was right. I followed his steps to remove it, and Hank was fine in about a week. Has anyone else had a vet issue solved by a random chicken person?

Honestly, old timers at the feed store know everything. My neighbor's hen had the same thing and a guy there fixed it with Epsom salts and a pocket knife.

Hold up, you're talking about surgery with a pocket knife? That sounds like a major infection risk for the bird. Maybe the hen got lucky that one time, but that's not a safe plan for every sick chicken. I'd be way too scared to try that myself.
