The $12 suet feeder I hung in my maple got raided by a squirrel in 3 days
I put up a cheap suet feeder in my backyard maple two weeks back, hoping to pull in woodpeckers like the ones I kept hearing drumming on my gutter. By day three, a squirrel had chewed through the plastic cage and cleaned out the whole cake in one sitting. I moved the feeder onto a shepherd's hook about 6 feet out from the trunk with no branches nearby, and the woodpeckers found it within a week. Now I get a downy and a red bellied pair almost daily. Has anyone had luck with a baffle that actually keeps squirrels off a pole mount?
Man, baffles are a waste of money in my book. Every one I tried the squirrel just climbed the pole anyway or jumped from something I didn't think was close enough. Sounds like you already solved it with that shepherd's hook, so I'd just stick with what's working.
