My neighbor said to put a water dish on the ground for the robins, and it actually worked

My neighbor Linda told me last month that robins prefer a ground-level water source for bathing. I always had my birdbath up on a stand. I put a simple ceramic dish on a flat rock near my garden. Within two days, I saw three robins splashing around in it. Now I see them there almost every morning. Anyone else have luck with ground water for specific birds?

Yeah, the ground-level thing is real. My buddy had the same tip from his grandma. He put out this old, shallow baking dish under his lilac bush. Tbh, he was shocked how many robins showed up, way more than ever used his fancy birdbath. They made a total mess of the mulch around it, but he didn't care.

That's interesting to hear about your buddy's success, @grant838. My own experience has been totally different though. I tried a shallow dish on the ground last spring and it just became a mosquito nursery and a raccoon water bowl. The birds never touched it. They still prefer my elevated bath with a dripper. Maybe it depends on the yard and how many predators are around.

Did he change the water every day?
