My neighbor in Tucson told me to stop cleaning my feeder every 3 days, and the finches came back
She said scrubbing it that often scares off the regulars and that a quick rinse every 10 days is plenty, which sounded gross until I actually tried it. Anyone else go longer between cleanings than the bird books say?
Rinsed mine way less once I figured out the real problem was the seed getting wet and molding, not the poop. Swapped to a tube feeder that keeps the seed dry and now every 2 weeks works fine, the finches don't even flinch. Tucson heat dries everything out fast too so you get away with way more than folks back east.
