My grandpa told me to stop raking under the feeder and I should have listened

He said the mess would bring more birds, but I kept cleaning it up for a whole year. Then I got lazy last fall and left the seed shells and leaves. Suddenly, I had towhees and juncos scratching around all winter, birds I never saw before. Has anyone else noticed more ground feeders when you leave a bit of a mess?

Maybe it helps them feel safer from hawks?
