Appreciation post: I finally figured out why the finches kept ditching my feeder
My neighbor in Phoenix pointed out I was using the wrong seed mix, a cheap one full of filler milo that they just kick to the ground. Anyone else have a bird type that's super picky about their snacks?

Oh man, I was just reading about this! Some birds really are picky eaters. Like cardinals love sunflower seeds, but they'll avoid that milo filler stuff completely. It's not about being fancy, it's just what their bodies are built to eat. So they'll literally go hungry staring at a full feeder of the wrong food.

It's just birdseed, not a five star restaurant menu. They're wild animals, they'll eat what's available if they're hungry enough. Seems like a lot of fuss over some spilled seed. Maybe the finches just found a better feeder down the street.

Actually, birds can starve if they don't find the right food, even with seed around. It's not just about being hungry.
