Question about the trail to Lake Serene in Washington

I hiked it last fall thinking it was just a day trip, but the old fire lookout near the top has a flat spot perfect for a tent. Now I'm rethinking my whole plan for that area. Anyone know other routes around there with similar surprise camping spots?

Heard the old miner's cabin on the Mount Dickerman trail has a similar flat clearing. Could be worth checking out.

That cabin clearing is about a quarter mile past the main trail split, @harper_hart. The ground is flat enough for a couple tents but it gets super muddy after any rain. You'd want a real tarp under your tent floor, not just a basic footprint. I tried it last fall and spent half an hour digging a trench to divert water.

Honestly that spot is way better than people say. I camped there after two days of rain last May and the ground was firm. The trick is to pick a site near the big pine tree where the roots drain the water. My cheap tent footprint worked fine, didn't even get damp. Charlie's trench thing sounds like he just set up in the wrong low spot.
