I finally listened to a ranger about the High Sierra Trail

A park ranger in Sequoia told me to carry a bear canister even for a quick overnight, saying 'the bears here are smarter than your average hiker.' I ignored it and hung my food, only to wake up to a ripped bag and a missing dinner near Bearpaw Meadow. How do you guys handle food storage on popular routes where the animals are really used to people?

That ranger gave you solid advice. I've done the High Sierra Trail three times and always use a bear canister, even for one night. The bears at Bearpaw Meadow are basically professional thieves at this point. A can is the only thing they haven't figured out how to beat.

My friend learned that lesson the hard way too! She thought her bear hang was perfect until a clever little marmot chewed through her pack. @tara_gonzalez20 is totally right, those animals are pros. I just suck it up and carry the can now.
