I dropped $400 on a custom printed map for a 5 day trip in the Wind River Range. Some friends say it's a waste when apps exist, but having the whole route on one waterproof sheet saved me when my phone died. What's your take on paper maps vs digital?

Spent a whole day in the backcountry with a dead phone battery once (rookie move, I know). My buddy's paper map got us back to the trailhead when it was getting dark. Apps are great for planning, but that physical map doesn't need a signal or a charge. Your $400 sounds like cheap insurance to me.
