Used to mix filler by eye for 12 years, now I measure it on a digital scale from Harbor Freight
A guy at the PPG training day in Toledo told me he weighs his filler in grams and I laughed at first, but after 3 batches that kicked too fast on a hot July job I bought a $20 scale and my pinholes dropped way off, so I'm curious if anyone else went this route or just stuck with the old eyeball method.
Man, I gotta disagree on the scale being the fix here. If you had three batches kick on you in July heat, that's a temp problem, not a measuring problem. Filler kicks faster when it's 95 in the booth no matter how perfect your ratio is, and a scale won't cool the shop down. I've been mixing by eye for almost 20 years and my pinholes went away when I started paying attention to how hot the panel was and how much hardener I was really adding on humid days. Not saying the scale doesn't work for you, but I'd bet the batch that finally made you buy it was a heat issue dressed up as a ratio issue. What did your pinholes actually look like before, tiny ones all over or more like the filler wasn't laying down smooth?
