A comment on my Orion shot made me stop stacking so many frames
Someone here said my stacked Milky Way photo looked 'too smooth, like plastic.' They were right. I was stacking 50 light frames trying to kill all the noise, but it wiped out the fine dust clouds. Now I stack maybe 15 frames and keep a bit of grain. It feels more real. Do you ever worry about over-processing your deep sky shots?

My rule is to stop stacking when the faintest dust lanes start to look soft.

Honestly I've never understood the push for perfect noise free space photos. That plastic look from stacking 50 frames is exactly why I keep it under 20. The grain is part of the real sky, it's not a studio shot. Why are we trying to make deep space look like a video game cutscene anyway?
