The farmer at the feed store swore I was overwatering my tomatoes

He said 'stick your finger in 2 inches deep and if it's damp, walk away' and I fought him on it for a month until my plants got root rot and now I just poke the dirt like a maniac, has anyone else had to learn the hard way that less water is more?

Oh man, the finger test never lies. I killed three plants before I learned.

The finger test thing sounded way too simple to work, I used to think you needed some fancy moisture meter or something. But after drowning a fern and drying out a snake plant, I finally tried just sticking my finger in the dirt and honestly it's all I do now. It's crazy how much of a difference that one little trick makes, saved my peace lily from me being overzealous with the watering can.

Right? Three plants is basically the cost of admission to the plant club. I'm pretty sure my first succulent committed a slow, dramatic suicide just to teach me a lesson.
