My brother told me to always bring a trowel on a dig, and he was right

I was helping on a survey in Arizona last fall and forgot mine. Ended up trying to carefully uncover a small ceramic piece with a stick and my hands for an hour. What's the one piece of gear you'd never leave behind?

Just using your hands for what exactly? Like, are we talking about mixing something, cleaning, or a specific task? The details matter because sometimes hands work great, other times you really do need a tool to get it done right.
