I thought swapping a compressor was always the answer, until Tuesday in Bayview
Three years ago I picked up a used Frigidaire fridge off Craigslist and swore every cooling problem came down to a bad compressor. Last Tuesday a lady in Bayview called me about her freezer sitting at 40 degrees, and I showed up ready to quote her $650 for a new one. Something told me to check the condenser coils first, and they were packed solid with dog hair and dust an inch thick. I vacuumed them out, cleaned the fan blade, and the temp dropped to 0 in about two hours, no parts needed. Now I'm wondering how many compressors I've replaced over the years when a $0 cleaning would've done it. Anybody else catch themselves jumping straight to the big fix out of habit?
