A customer told me my diagnostic approach was like 'throwing spaghetti at the wall'

I was working on a weird intermittent drain issue on a 2 year old dishwasher in a Charlotte apartment. I kept swapping parts, starting with the pump, then the drain hose, then the control board. The customer, an older guy who used to be an electrician, watched me for a bit and finally said, 'Son, you're just throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks. Have you checked the simple stuff, like the air gap under the sink?' Sure enough, a kid's toy was jammed in it. Ever since, I always start with the free and easy checks before I even open my tool bag. Anyone else have a customer call them out on a bad habit?

But honestly, is that even a bad habit? Sometimes you gotta swap a few parts to rule things out. That's just how you find the real problem on tricky jobs.

Ugh, but swapping parts first is how you rack up a huge bill for no reason.
