The day my bokashi bin showed me what real composting looks like
Honestly, I had been tossing my kitchen scraps into a plain plastic tub with holes poked in the lid for three years, thinking the moldy smell meant it was working. Then my neighbor in unit 4B let me peek into her setup last Tuesday and I realized mine was just rotting garbage, not breaking down at all. Has anyone else been running a fake compost system for way too long before figuring out you need actual bedding or a starter culture?

Wait, you had holes poked in a plastic tub for three years? That's basically what I was doing too, but with an old cooler. I thought the smell meant it was working, like a funky science project. Then I saw a friend's actual bin with the bran stuff and it was just... clean dirt. Mine was a slimy mess with fruit flies that I kept convincing myself was fine. Changed my whole setup after that, got a proper kit with the spray bottle and everything. Night and day difference, my plants actually get food now instead of me just feeding the local maggot population.
