My neighbor told me my compost bucket smelled like a dead animal
I was using a basic plastic bin with a lid for my kitchen scraps, and I thought it was fine. Then my neighbor in 4B said she could smell it from the hallway, which was pretty embarrassing. She suggested I add way more browns, like torn up cardboard or dry leaves, every single time I put food in. I started doing a 3:1 ratio of browns to greens, and after two weeks the smell was completely gone. It turns out I was basically just making a wet garbage soup before. Has anyone else had a neighbor call them out on their compost stink?

Honestly, some smells are just the price of doing good for the earth.

Oh man, that browns tip is everything. I had the same wet soup problem in my old apartment. I started keeping a bag of shredded paper next to the bin and just dumping a big handful on top after every scrap addition. It soaked up the moisture so fast and the flies totally stopped.
