Hit 500 pounds of compost from my tiny kitchen and it blew my mind

I've been collecting scraps in a 5 gallon bucket under my sink for about 2 years now. Last week I finally dumped it all at the community drop-off and the guy weighed it. 512 pounds. That's like a quarter of a car. I'm in a 600 square foot apartment in Austin. Never thought one person making coffee and chopping veggies could add up to that much. Anyone else ever tally up their total and get shocked?

Funny how it creeps up on you like that. I kept a tally for a year once and it was mostly coffee grounds and banana peels, stuff you never think weighs anything until you stack it all up. The water weight alone from melon rinds and old lettuce is insane, probably half my bucket was just moisture that cooked off. Makes you realize how much grocery store packaging hides the real volume of what we throw away.

@the_skyler You're on coffee grounds but the water weight doesn't cook off, it just sits at the bottom of the landfill.
