Last Tuesday changed my mind about mecha anime

I always thought mecha shows were just giant robots punching each other for 50 episodes, boring stuff. Then I saw the first 3 episodes of Code Geass during a sick day and realized the political scheming and character drama hooked me way more than the robot fights. Has anyone else had a specific anime totally flip their opinion on a whole genre?

Giant robots punching each other for 50 episodes" - that's how I felt about Gundam until I accidentally watched the whole thing.

Oh man, same. Code Geass is the gateway drug. The chess match stuff is way more interesting than the giant robots.
