Picked a $20 tripod over a $80 one and it nearly ruined my roll

Tbh I was at a swap meet last Saturday and had to choose between this beat up aluminum Vivitar tripod for $20 or a solid Manfrotto for $80. I cheaped out and grabbed the Vivitar cause I was low on cash. Set it up at the park to shoot some long exposure night shots and the wind just made the whole thing shake like crazy. Got my film back from the lab yesterday and every single shot was blurry. Has anyone else learned this lesson the hard way with cheap tripods?

Ngl that sucks big time, I feel your pain. Honestly I had a similar thing happen with a cheap tripod I grabbed off Amazon and it turned all my night shots into wavy blurs. Tbh it's one of those lessons you only learn once, now I always test gear before taking it out for real shoots.

800 bucks down the drain on a lens that turned everything into a funhouse mirror (and not the good kind). That's a brutal way to learn the "test it before you trust it" rule. Something nobody talks about though is how humidity can mess with electronics and glass even if it's not raining. I had a speedlight die on me mid-wedding once because it sat in a damp bag overnight. Maybe your issue was a lens element that wasn't sealed right from the start, or a firmware glitch that only showed up under stress. Either way, that's a rough hit to take on a brand new piece of kit.

Yeah, that's rough. What worked for me was just buying a cheap used body or lens first to run through all the paces before trusting something expensive. I got burned on a filter once that looked fine in the box but had a tiny scratch that only showed up in direct sunlight. Now I take every piece of gear out for a test day in different conditions before calling it good. If you've got any warranty left on that lens, I'd push the manufacturer hard. Some of them will actually refund or replace if you prove it's defective. But either way, you'll never skip the test run again, right?
