Update: My home tool storage caused corrosion on aircraft gauges

I kept some of my aircraft inspection gauges in a shed out back. The shed had poor sealing and let in damp air all spring. Over time, my pitot static testers developed light surface rust. I only saw it when I pulled them out for a pre-flight check last week. That rust can throw off readings and lead to big problems. Now I use airtight containers with silica gel packs for anything at home. Double check where you store your sensitive gear.

Dealt with the same issue on my micrometer set... left them in an unheated workshop over the winter and they got all spotty. Now I keep all my precision tools in sealed boxes with those little moisture absorber packets.

Tossing in extra silica packets stops rust dead in its tracks.

Wait, so you just toss loose packets in with the tools? I’ve always wondered if that actually works long-term or if they get used up too fast. How often do you have to swap them out for new ones, or do you recharge them somehow?
