Question about frozen fries in the air fryer

I used to bake them for 30 minutes, but after a friend in Phoenix showed me his method, I just do 12 minutes at 400. Anyone have a better trick for getting them extra crispy?

But doesn't that extra step just make more dishes to wash for a minor improvement?

My Phoenix buddy's trick is to soak the fries in hot water for 10 minutes first, then pat them bone dry. It pulls out surface starch so they get way crispier in that same 400 degree cook. A light spray of oil after that soak makes them almost like takeout.
