Spotting more double-walled tumblers at the park got me thinking about insulation.

I keep seeing people with those fancy cups that keep drinks hot or cold for hours. It works by trapping air between layers to slow down heat transfer, which is just basic physics. Have you found other common gadgets that rely on simple principles like this?

Actually, many high-end tumblers use a vacuum between the walls instead of just trapped air. A vacuum stops heat transfer better because it removes air molecules that carry heat. That basic idea is also behind traditional thermos bottles. For another common gadget, consider a simple lever can opener. It uses a pivot point to multiply force, making the cutting easier. Pendulum clocks work on a similar principle, relying on a regular swing to measure time.

Wait they literally remove ALL the air? that's crazy. My mind is blown they can do that with a coffee cup.

My Yeti tumbler's vacuum seal, like @ross.cameron described, keeps coffee hot for my entire commute.
