Bought a barn find for $800, repair costs hit $2,400 real quick

Saw a 1975 Honda CB550 on Craigslist, owner said it just needed carb cleaning. Got it home and the engine had a cracked case from a dropped chain. Anyone else have a "cheap" project that turned into a money pit faster than they expected?

My buddy picked up a "runs great" Yamaha XS650 for $600 a couple summers back. Seller swore it just needed a battery and some fresh gas. Turned out the transmission was shot, second gear was totally stripped, and he ended up pulling the whole motor apart in his garage. That "cheap" bike cost him close to three grand before he ever rode it. He still talks about it like it was a great deal though, go figure.
