Just realized the trail condition reports on apps are never right

I drove two hours to hike Pine Creek Canyon last weekend. The app said the trail was clear, but a huge tree was down blocking the path. I had to turn back and waste the whole day. Why can't these updates be more accurate? What do you use to check conditions before heading out?

Call the local ranger station, they usually know about recent tree falls.

Wait, you drove two whole hours for that? That's brutal. I'd be so mad. Honestly, those apps are just guessing most of the time. I've started calling the park office directly, which is a pain but it works.

My buddy Jake tried to hike Devil's Backbone Trail in March. His app said it was clear but he hit three huge trees down across the first mile. He spent an hour just trying to get around the first one before giving up. Now he checks a hiking forum where people post photos from the day before.
