Shoutout to the ranger at Arches who changed my mind about rock hammers
Ngl, I was set on using my dad's old crack hammer on a trip last month, but she convinced me to rent a proper geologist's pick instead. Honestly, the difference in control for chipping a small sample of sandstone was huge, anyone have a favorite brand for under $50?

Imagine trying to do brain surgery with a sledgehammer, that was basically me with my dad's old hammer. Good on that ranger for saving some poor sandstone formation from my clumsy enthusiasm. I'm just picturing you trying to chip off a postage stamp sized piece and accidentally creating a whole new arch.

Aw man, @the_mary, I kinda get the urge though. Sometimes you just want a little piece of a cool place to remember it by. (Not that I'd actually do it, rangers are right to stop that stuff.)
