A wedding decoration led to a geology debate at my table

I was at a wedding last Saturday, and the tables had these shiny black rocks as decorations. My friend picked one up and declared it was obsidian. I remembered from a book that obsidian is glassy, but this felt rough. I said it might be something else, like anthracite coal. Another guest, who turns out to be a teacher, jumped in with facts about volcanic rocks. We ended up passing the rock around, all trying to guess what it was. The whole thing was silly but fun, and now I'm reading up on rock types.

Honestly, I saw this happen at a cousin's wedding. They had cool geodes as centerpieces and people were totally into them. The trick is to make the item part of the guestbook or a favor. Like, have people sign the rock or take it home with a thank you tag. It becomes a fun memory of the day, not a distraction.

Bet the rock got more attention than the couple.

Think about it, @sandralee. Is the rock getting more attention really a problem? People like shiny things, but that doesn't mean the couple is ignored. From my view, everyone still knows the day is about the couple. Maybe we're just looking for stuff to complain about instead of letting things be.
