Met a guy at the Portland farmers market who gave me a handful of 'dragon carrot' seeds and said 'these will make you smile in January'.
He was right, because pulling up those bright purple carrots on a gray winter day was the best garden surprise I've had in years, and now I save seeds from every single one. Anyone else have a seed that gave them a happy shock?

That's the best part about saving seeds, you get to pass that same surprise along. I gave some of my dragon carrot seeds to a neighbor last spring and seeing her kids' faces when they pulled up purple carrots was just as good as growing them myself. It turns a single happy shock into a whole chain of them.

I always thought seeds were just seeds until my first dragon carrot harvest.

Man, that's so true. It's like each saved seed is a little time capsule of that first surprise. I gave some of my weird bumpy gourd seeds to my cousin, and he had no idea what was going to grow. When those twisted things finally showed up, his whole family was laughing and poking at them. That shared confusion turned into a great story. Now he's saving seeds from them to pass on too.
