Tried a vinegar and steel wool stain on a maple table and it came out purple instead of gray.

My last table had a stain that dried way too pink. I ended up sanding it back down and using a gel stain over the top, which actually worked. It took three coats to get a color I could live with. The key was letting each coat dry a full 24 hours before touching it. I mean, it added a week to the project, but it fixed the mess. Sometimes you just have to roll with the weird result and cover it up.
