I chose a shellac finish over poly for a 1920s oak dresser and now I'm fighting with every fingerprint.

The client wanted something 'authentic' and I thought the amber tone would be perfect, but after three coats and a light buff with 0000 steel wool, the surface shows every single smudge from the moment it leaves my shop.

Ugh, the authentic patina is your fingerprints now.

It's funny how many things are sold as "lived in" or "worn" now. You see it with new jeans, leather bags, even some furniture. The goal seems to be skipping the actual living part to get straight to the look of it.

Right? It's like we're paying extra for a fake story now. I saw a brand new jacket last week that was already ripped and stained... for more money than a clean one. What's the point of having your own stuff if it comes with someone else's pretend memories?
