My first dozen ink bottles all looked like black hole puddles. I think my hand was just wired for maximum pressure on the nib. Learning to lighten up literally changed my whole page.

Seriously, I always thought darker ink meant better quality work. Then I saw what @mary227 said about pressure and it clicked for me. Playing with light shades actually adds more life to my writing now.
